I’ve been thinking about a strange dream…

Jun 1, 2020

For He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul He fills with good things.
Psalm 107:9 (ESV)

It is unusual for me to remember my dreams, but one recently got my attention. In my dream somehow a tiny baby attached itself to me. The poor thing was shriveled with a Martian-like face and it was very needy—extremely needy as a matter of fact—and clingy! To keep it alive I would have to re-prioritize my entire life and I was doomed to carry it with me at all times—everywhere!

Strangely the image remained lodged in my memory and refused to be extricated! A few days later when I explained my vivid dream to Darryl, he playfully asked, “Am I the shriveled baby?” I have to say I laughed out loud at the absurdity of it all and his hilarious reaction—until I had a revelation.

The revelation occurred when a question came to mind that was asked at the Last Supper. In Matthew chapter 26, Jesus talks about His betrayal by one of His disciples. Verse 22 says the disciples …were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto Him, “LORD, is it I?”. I pictured the scene looking through the eyes of Jesus—taking in the disturbed looks and concerned tones.

Then the scene rotated, and I was looking through the eyes of the disciples. I breathed deeply and prayed, “LORD, is it I? What are You trying to tell me?” Ever so softly, I heard a gentle whisper, “The baby is your beleaguered soul.”

With the quarantine in full swing, we were forced to cancel three incredibly special trips. I was sad and discouraged. My Savior was reminding me these losses required extra soul care—His kind. I revisited Psalm 107:9 and there it was! A literal rendering of the verse from the Hebrew: because He satisfies—the soul—the dried out—and the soul—hungry—He fills with good things.

God got my attention before He intervened and saturated my soul with extra blessings. He even took the responsibility to remind me—by using a strange dream—to always live full tilt on this wild Tilt-A-Whirl ride called life!
