…We have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the LORD, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.
Colossians 1:9&10 (ESV)
For many years Pastor Darryl closed his sermons at Scottsdale Bible Church with his unique benediction of “Walk Worthy” based on this passage of Scripture. He often called believers princes and princesses of the King and his benediction was a constant reminder to seek higher ground in the daily affairs of life.
Paul earnestly prayed for believers to have a thorough knowledge of God’s will—meaning a comprehensive understanding of the way God expresses Himself in the Bible as well as the mental acuity to discriminate between what is true and false. Doctrine and ethics were inseparable to Paul. He believed knowledge was not an end in itself, but that the purpose of knowledge was to enable believers to live a life worthy of their Heavenly Father.
The Greek word translated “worthy” was often used in connection with a pair of scales in which the item on one side weighed as much as the item on the other side. By walking worthy, believers were encouraged to be fruitful and increasing in their knowledge of God commensurate with the weight of His lavish gifts to them.
The gifts God bestows on His side of the scale are—beautiful truths revealed in His Word—access to His divine wisdom and understanding—strength to live in a manner pleasing to Him—the ability to honor Him through selfless acts of service—and the energy to faithfully spread His love to the ends of the earth.
Pastor Darryl’s benediction was such an effective challenge that many believers responded enthusiastically—which in turn produced countless good works in neighborhoods and workplaces each week. Thus, as the reputation of Scottsdale Bible Church rippled out to the community, new believers came to know the Lord, received instruction in God’s Word, and began walking in a manner worthy of Him.
*As James Allen said, “The outer conditions of a person’s life will always be found to reflect their inner beliefs.” Walking worthy is the contribution I humbly offer on my side of the scale. It is my lavish gift of deep appreciation and sincere thanksgiving back to Him!
