We take every thought captive to obey Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV)
Studies have shown that an overwhelming majority of us are extremely uncomfortable sitting alone with only our thoughts to entertain us. “Most people seem to prefer to be doing something rather than nothing, even if it is something negative,” says a study conducted by psychologists at Harvard and the University of Virginia.
The study required participants to sit in a room alone for 6 to 15 minutes without any belongings or technology and to occupy themselves “with their thoughts.” The subjects then had to report back on how it made them feel, and most said they did not enjoy the experience much at all. In fact, the majority elected to receive an electric shock administered by pressing a button, rather than sit with their thoughts the entire time. Combating boredom can certainly be a challenge so this article put a new spin on how boredom can serve an important purpose—even be a blessing—in my busy life. It allows time and space for me to think and frees up brain space for creativity, daydreams, and goals—which produces energy for new ideas, tasks, and thoughts. Meaningful engagement with boredom opens my mind to boundary-pushing activities—new challenges and life experiences.
With a small amount of effort a possible list of more productive activities is likely to emerge from my roaming thoughts such as cleaning my living space, reading a book, spending time with a friend or family member, memorizing Scripture, praying—all productive activities.
Even more importantly, I can use boredom to create much-needed space in my life. I can actually choose to take my selfish thoughts captive and negate them of power—freeing me to make room for selfless choices—emulating Jesus’ example by exploring and initiating new innovative ways to serve others.
Jesus drew away to quiet places to connect with His Heavenly Father and focus on fulfilling His mission. He demonstrated beautiful acts of humility, service and self-giving. Likewise, fulfill Your purposes in my life, Lord. May boredom do its perfect work in me!
