I’ve been thinking about Wake Up! Wake Up! Wake Up!

May 1, 2018

For anything that becomes visible is light.
Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Ephesians 5:14 (ESV)

Is my mind dull? Is my soul asleep? Am I sleepwalking through life?

Our entire culture has become dull. Dullness is the absence of the light of our souls. Look around. We have lost the sparkle in our eyes, the passion in our marriages, the meaning in our work, the joy of our faith. – Mike Yaconelli*

Wake up, O sleeper!
We have all experienced heartache and it is easy to become disappointed. We can lose sight of the goodness of God and the call of God. But here we read we are to wake up and remember that Christ has given us a mission and a ministry—and a responsibility to pass on the sacred things that have been entrusted to us.

Wake up and arise from the dead!
We are to stir ourselves from spiritual deadness. We are to wake up and engage with life and enjoy all that God has provided for us. We are to become aware of what is truly beautiful—to notice and appreciate what really matters.

Much of the stress and emptiness that haunts us can be traced back to our lack of attention to beauty. Internally, the mind becomes coarse and dull if it remains unvisited by images and thoughts that hold the radiance of beauty. – John O’Donohue*

Ephesians 2:4-5 says, But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ. This is the most beautiful gift we will ever receive. By focusing on it we will be visited by many beautiful images and thoughts that will inspire us.

Wake up and Christ will shine on you!
When Christ shines His light on us, He reveals His truth to our dull minds. Thankfully Christ alone offers knowledge, holiness and comfort, assisting us with His grace, and refreshing our minds with joy and peace.

Don’t forget! God’s plans for you have not changed and His love for you has not diminished. It’s time to wake up!
