Behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands. And crying out in a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb!”
Revelation 7:9-10 (ESV)
John saw a great multitude standing in Heaven before the throne crying out in unison and in total harmony, “Salvation belongs to our God…and to the Lamb.” This multitude was worshiping God as the only Source of their salvation, and the Lamb as the only One who could pay the price and make salvation available to them.
Saying or singing this message gives praise to God the Father on the throne and to the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne. “Salvation to our God” is a Hebraistic expression which is translated in Psalm 3:8, “Salvation belongs to the Lord (Jehovah).”
Revelation chapter 22 verse 3 goes on to add that in Heaven, No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His servants will worship Him. Believers in the presence of the throne of God will gratefully serve Him around the clock day and night. In this context serving God has a primary meaning of worshiping Him.
This verse has a profound impact on our thinking about Heaven. We need to listen to what God tells us in His Word, about our future vocation there. If as the redeemed of God, we worship and serve God, and we reign forever and ever, then we get a picture of Heaven as a place of perpetual motion and never ceasing assignments that bring immense joy in honoring and serving Him.
Some have imagined our main occupation throughout eternity will be floating on a fluffy white cloud playing a harp. But God will have far more for us as believers to do in Heaven. Since God is infinite, there will always be something new, fresh, and wonderful to do and thoroughly enjoy in our service of worship of Him. The things of earth will grow strangely dim and fade away as we pay unending homage to Him and continually praise His beautiful attributes.
“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen!”
Revelation 7:12 (ESV)
